SUMMARY:Boskone – IN PERSON!
DESCRIPTION:Boskone is BACK! This annual celebration of speculative fiction/science fiction\, and fantasy in books\, music\, media\, and more is once again happening Feb. 18-20 at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel – and there’s also a virtual component for those who can’t or don’t want to gather in person just yet. I’ve got several events lined up IN PESON for Friday evening and Saturday with some of my favorite people. Won’t you join us? \n \nMy schedule: \nVery Far Future SF Format: Panel\n18 Feb 2022\, Friday 18:00 – 18:50\, Marina I (Westin)It’s hard enough predicting what next week will be like. How can we write SF taking place thousands or even millions of years in the future? How do we make the remote descendants of humanity relatable to readers? How do you convey a culture which has no continuity with our own? With Tamsyn Muir\, Rich Larson\, and James Cambias (M) \n\nScience Fiction Meets Detective Fiction Format: Panel\n19 Feb 2022\, Saturday 10:00 – 10:50\, Marina II (Westin)Even SF/F/H authors enjoy solving a good mystery. Writers from Isaac Asimov and Philip K. Dick to J.D. Robb\, Tanya Huff\, Caitlin R. Kiernan\, and Aliette de Bodard have all deployed detective characters. The panel may consider these and other fantastic fictional detectives\, detective story structures within SF plots\, whether a great detective needs a good murder\, and other bloody intriguing themes. With Colin Alexander\, Brendan DuBois (M)\, Chris Panatier\, and Leigh Perry\nAnatomy of a Relationship: Writing Characters Who Display Healthy Human Connections Format: Panel\n19 Feb 2022\, Saturday 15:00 – 15:50\, Harbor II (Westin)Move over emotionally constipated lone wolves! We’re looking for characters who connect with each other in strong and compelling relationships. How can we build romances that are both healthy and riveting? How does a character’s gender impact the cliches and problematic patterns we see\, and how do we get past those in creating a character’s ties to others? How do friendship and other non-romantic social connections get represented in positive and impactful ways? Let’s also discuss the strong bonds that can form in subculture communities\, rather than only having the token gay kid or the token immigrant. With Tabitha Lord (Association of RI Authors) (M)\, Leigh Perry\, and  Cat Scully. \n(I’ll also be signing books on Saturday\, 16:00 – 16:50\, Galleria – Autographing (Westin) \n\nHere’s how to join me at Boskone this February 18-20\, 2022 in Boston\, MA for an unforgettable science fiction and fantasy experience! It’s going to be an incredible weekend of books\, science\, art\, games\, music\, and more.

SUMMARY:Boston Lit Crawl
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the Boston Book Fest’s Lit Crawl is “taking it to the streets\,” in that all events will be OUTSIDE! The June 10 eventincludes three evening sessions (at 6\, 7\, and 8 pm)\, and I am thrilled that I’ll be part of two events\, both taking place in Cambridge’s Central Square. The first – at 6 p.m. – is a Mystery Writers of America “Making a Mystery\,” at Starlight Square 84 Bishop Allen Drive (the stage in the H-Mart parking lot). If you’ve been to one of these interactive events before\, you know what to expect. If not\, think “game show” meets “plotting the perfect murder.” I’ll be joined by Sarah Smith\, Kate Flora\, Dale Phillips\, TIllia Jacobs\, and Elaine Isaak.) This 40-minute event is FREE (though you are encouraged to donate). \nThen\, at 8 p.m.\, Broad Universe is hosting a rapid-fire reading on the Dial Restaurant Roofdeck at 907 Mass. Ave. This is a TICKETED event\, but the $15 fee covers appetizers and (some) beverages. (The Lit Crawl is trying to help out our hard-hit restaurants and watering places.) All events will be capacity limited by COVID guidelines\, so if you can register ahead! Look for a whole cast of authors doing quick reads – and signing books after! \nRain date for the Lit Crawl is Wed.\, June 16.

SUMMARY:Boskone!
DESCRIPTION:Join me at Boskone (February 14-16\, 2019) in Boston\, MA for New England’s longest running science fiction and fantasy convention. It’s going to be a fun weekend filled with discussions of books\, art\, games\, film\, music\, and more. For more information\, visit the Boskone website: http://www.boskone.org/ \n \nThere’s tons going on all weekend\, but if you’re looking for me try the bar I will be on a bunch of panels – and moderating two (a change!) too! \n\nMarvelous Magical Systems\nFormat: Panel\n14 Feb 2020\, Friday 14:00 – 14:50\, Harbor II (Westin) \nMagical systems are like the laws of science. They have rules. Rules that must be followed or the magic won’t work or the magic will be released in unforeseen ways. Let’s look at what it takes to create a magical system that feels real and plausible. We’ll also review some of the best magical systems in literature and consider why they work so well. \nGerald L. Coleman\, Liz Delton\, Tonia Thompson (NIGHTLIGHT Podcast) (M)\, Clea Simon\, Mike Squatrito Jr (Association of Rhode Island Authors) \n\n  \n\nThe Role of Supernatural Animals\nFormat: Panel\n14 Feb 2020\, Friday 16:00 – 16:50\, Burroughs (Westin) \nWhat defines an animal as supernatural? Cats would agree that they are both super and natural\, but cats do have their own perspective on the world. Our panel of SFnal experts will help to define the roles of supernatural animals from dragons to griffons and … cats! \nJulie C. Day (M)\, Tonia Thompson (NIGHTLIGHT Podcast)\, Clea Simon\, Lisa Hertel (The Cogitation Zone) \n\n  \n\nJournalism in Speculative Fiction\nFormat: Panel\n14 Feb 2020\, Friday 17:00 – 17:50\, Marina 2 (Westin) \nFrom Wells and Orwell to Neil Gaiman\, Cory Doctorow\, and Annalee Newitz\, there’s a long tradition of reporters becoming writers of SF/F/H. Our veteran newshounds report on what a background in journalism can bring to genre work. Are you already accustomed to research\, deadlines\, and low wages? Does the drive to get the facts mean it’s harder to make stuff up? Can reporters be written as good genre characters? While pounding out a hot story\, must you wear a fedora? \nDarlene Marshall\, Clea Simon (M)\, Dan Moren\, Daniel P. Dern\, \n\n\nReading: Clea Simon\nFormat: Reading\n15 Feb 2020\, Saturday 13:30 – 13:55\, Independence (Westin) \nClea Simon \n\n  \n\nBoskone 57 Book Party\nFormat: Event\n15 Feb 2020\, Saturday 18:30 – 19:30\, Galleria – Stage (Westin) \nCome join the fun at Boskone 57’s Book Party. You’ll meet the authors and publishers who have new books coming out at the con! This is your chance to see what’s new from writers you already love\, as well as those you have yet to discover. \nSara Codair (https://saracodair.com/)\, Dave Seeley (daveseeley.com)\, Mike Squatrito Jr (Association of Rhode Island Authors)\, Jeff Hecht\, Clea Simon\, Nicole Givens Kurtz (Mocha Memoirs Press)\, R.W.W. Greene\, Steven Popkes\, Gregory Wilson\, Errick Nunnally\, James Patrick Kelly (writer)\, Kim Stanley Robinson\, Christopher Paniccia (Gridiron Publishing)\, E. C. Ambrose\, Jeffrey A. Carver\, Erin Underwood (M)\, Rick Berry (RickBerryStudio)\, Patricia Morgan Lang (NESFA Press)\, Jim Burns \n\n  \n\nThe Literary Legacy of C.S. Lewis\nFormat: Panel\n16 Feb 2020\, Sunday 11:00 – 11:50\, Burroughs (Westin) \nC.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were friends. Both created rich imaginary worlds: Lewis’ Narnia portal fantasies and Tolkien’s epic fantasies. Yet much more has been written and discussed about Tolkien’s influence. It’s time to redress the imbalance. Don’t Lewis’ queens Lucy and Susan\, and even the White Witch\, compare favorably to the lack of female agency in Tolkien’s work\, and foretell many later heroines and villainesses? How many of our genre’s school-age protagonists owe their existence to Lewis’ examples? Oh\, and don’t forget The Screwtape Letters’ contribution to the satirical fantastic. Is Lewis still influencing fantasy today? \nDiana Rowland (M)\, John Langan\, Ginjer Buchanan\, Clea Simon\, Christopher Paniccia (Gridiron Publishing) \n\n  \n\nThe Secret to Sequels\nFormat: Panel\n16 Feb 2020\, Sunday 12:00 – 12:50\, Burroughs (Westin) \nSo the first book was great! Now it’s time to write the second one\, under deadline. No matter how many series an author has written\, they always have to tackle second book syndrome. So what does it take to get the book out on time\, while promoting the first book\, planning the third book\, and trying not to get caught up in the swell of reader responses? \nE. C. Ambrose (M)\, Zig Zag Claybourne (Obsidian Sky Books)\, Leigh Perry\, Clea Simon\, Sarah Smith \n\n  \n\nPlaying in the Post-Apocalypse World\nFormat: Panel\n16 Feb 2020\, Sunday 13:00 – 13:50\, Marina 1 (Westin) \nWhy do so many SF writers enjoy playing in this subgenre? Are they simply reporting reasonable extrapolations\, because we’re clearly doomed real soon due to climate\, corporations\, overcrowding\, video games\, superbugs\, big meteorites\, and/or reality TV? Is it just because story thrives on conflict\, and post-apocalyptic landscapes offer so much scope for disagreements—with chainsaws? Our panelists take a look at some of the more interesting post-apocalyptic worlds as they discuss why they are so compelling and what makes them work. \nJulie C.
